Kid Creole and the Coconuts

 Kid Creole and the Coconuts

On tour Fall 2018 & Spring 2019

August Darnell (Kid Creole), after founding Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, says he had a vision of what would become of Kid Creole and the Coconuts in a nightmare where he was walking on 5th Avenue in New York.

Born in the Bronx in 1950, Darnell is a man of many cultures, legends and personalities. In the late '70s, August Darnell and Andy Hernandez together formed the group Kid Creole and the Coconuts, accompanied by many musicians. Their style ranges from disco to salsa, jazz and zouk.

In 1980, the band released their first single "Maladie D’Amour", taken from the album "Off the Coast of Me" published the same year and welcomed by critics. A year later, the group returned with the album "Fresh Fruits in Foreign Places", then "Tropical Gangsters" in 1982 which brought him success with 3 songs appearing in the Top 10 of the English charts.

During the 1990s, Kid Creole and the Coconuts toured the world while taking the time to record and put out four albums during the decade, including "The Conquest of You" in 1997.

For more than 28 years, Kid Creole and the Coconuts have entertained crowds around the world. Inspired by Cab Calloway and the Hollywood movies of the '30s and' 40s, the Kid, a character created and played by Darnell, wears his colorful zoot costumes with grace and style, dancing with his inimitable, relentless and self-proclaimed cool.

August Darnell, as the Kid, is known for his talent as a composer, social commentator and lyricist. He is accompanied by the Coconuts, three dazzling young ladies, who have little tolerance of the Kid and his egocentric and sometimes sexist behavior.

Kid Creole and the Coconuts stay out of the boxes and transcend the musical and fashion trends. Their energy and originality on stage are their hallmarks.

In 2011, the band released a new album "I Wake Up Screaming", 10 years after the release of their previous album "Too Cool to Conga! ", Bringing together all the musical styles explored by Darnell during his career.

April 2018 saw a reissue of the albums "Private Waters and the Great Divide" and "You Shoulda Told Me You Were ..." released respectively in 1990 and 1991 by Columbia Records. This collection of 2 CDs is released on the Cherry Red Records label.

Kid Creole and the Coconuts will be touring in 2019 and Spring 2020.
